COSS Weekly #184

Here's the one-hundred eighty-fourth issue of COSS Weekly, the global commercial open source (COSS) company category newsletter, brought to you every weekend by the team at OSS Capital, creators and stewards of COSS Community and Open Core Summit.

We deliver only the most fresh 😋 news from the previous week in COSS across: Funding, Content, Jobs, Liquidity and $COSS (Public Markets).

Last week saw €600M in funding announcements from Mistral AI, Raspberry Pi's debut on the stock exchange, Plane's progress, news on AI, and more!

Happy Father's Day — and enjoy!

💰 COSS Funding: €600M

  • Mistral AI, an open and generative portable AI, announced their €600M Series B at €5.8B valuation led by General Catalyst. Link

📚 COSS Content

  • Pedro Sanders: "What's one open-source alternative you are hoping to adopt soon? So far, so good with: Cal.com Dub.co @documenso I'm thinking of moving to @typesense and @hoppscotch_io next." Link

  • JJ: "We go rare ... $52M~ funds. 5 extremely high conviction positions that are 10% of the fund and 10-15% ownership. Another 5 super high conviction positions that are 7-10% of the fund. Another 10~ positions that are 2-7% ownership and merely high conviction. Have replicated this construction to great effect approaching 4th fund now." Link

  • Juan Linietsky: "Enterprise industry has long since understood the value of FOSS. Game industry is starting to do it with Godot. Hoping the graphics/design industry does at some point, as FOSS alternatives are still lagging behind." Link

  • Percy Liang: "We should call models like Llama 3, Mixtral, etc. "open-weight models", not "open-source models". For a model to be open-source, the code and training data need to be public (good examples: GPT-J, OLMo, RedPajama, StarCoder, K2, etc.). Weights are like an exe file, which would be ridiculous to call open-source." Link

  • Vamsi Kurama: "@planepowers crossed a few million requests on the external public APIs alone." Link

  • Juan Linietsky: "So how is #GodotEngine coming along for you nowadays? If you had to describe your top 3 pain points, what would them be?" Link

  • Bill Gurley: "If you had any doubt this wasn't an attempt at regulatory capture.... This is not normal startup behavior. You can play on the field or try to bend the rules to your favor. Maybe it's both." Link

  • Godot Conference: "Get your tickets NOW godotengine.org/article/godotc..." Link

  • hardmaru: "This is controversial, but I'd rather see companies release Apache-2 licensed models, but keep certain models proprietary, than release everything under some non-open-source restrictive "community" license, which has the adverse effect of encouraging and normalizing restrictions." Link

  • Kelsey Hightower: "We are making content when we should be making a connection." Link

💸 COSS Liquidity (M&A + IPOs)

  • JJ: "Huge congrats to the makers of @Raspberry_Pi on their super successful LSE public markets debut." Link
  • TechCrunch: "Raspberry Pi is now a public company as its shares pop after IPO pricing tcrn.ch/4et6Rwu" Link

🛠️ COSS Jobs

  • 4,583 jobs and 313 companies hiring! Link
  • JJ: "Change the world. Work at @CalCom. cal.com/jobs" Link
